SKINCARE


Oh, what a time to be alive… 2020 has been a trip! Anyone else spend a “few” minutes on TikTok before bed, check the time, and all of a sudden it’s 5am and you haven’t slept yet? ‘Cause same and it’s been weighing on my skin. Let’s dive into some skincare tips, tricks and underrated Sephora products together. After all, we have all this time to spend on some self-care, let’s make it count!

If you’re new to skincare, I thought I’d break it down for you in a few simple steps that have worked for me. I’m a big believer in “less is more” when it comes to skincare, my home life and wellness.

I want to start by addressing that I’m not a dermatologist nor am I skincare professional, although, I have been regulating my skin for over a decade now. Through trial and error, I got to understand my skin type, what it likes and doesn’t like, and finally finding the perfect combination of products. One of the advantages of working in my field is having the privilege to test out a whole array of products and brands. So, naturally, I thought it would be a good time for me to share my insights on one of my favourite topics: skincare. 

FACE CLEANSING

The first and most obvious step is removing your makeup. I highly recommend this Bioderma makeup remover. It has been a ride or die product of mine for years now.

My morning routine consists of mainly cold water, vitamin C serum, eye cream, face cream and SPF (sorry, that’s a lie… I rarely use SPF in Canada ‘cause we never see the sun but I totally live by the fact that it should be applied every day).

Moving on, cleansing is, first and foremost, the most important part to any skincare. You’ll need to find a good cleanser that works for your specific skin and its type. I recommend using any product that’s made with (mostly) natural ingredients so that you can avoid any bad skin reactions. That is why the Youth To The People superfood cleanser and Fresh soy cleanser are some of my favourites. Moreover, if you’ve spent a full day wearing face makeup, I also strongly recommend exfoliating. 

EXFOLIATING

Exfoliating is something that your skin will thank you for in so many ways. I highly recommend a good weekly exfoliation. You’ll feel like a brand new person. I do not recommend exfoliating every day or every other day. You don’t want to remove all of the oils your skin produces naturally. This will most likely cause your skin to break out. Your skin needs some of its natural oils to combat germs in the air. I usually allocate exfoliating to my nighttime routine. Some of my fave exfoliators are by Amore Pacific, Dermalogica, Fresh and Tata Harper. I’ve made sure to add all of my favourite Sephora exfoliators right under here. 

SKIN TONER

Toning your skin will help balance your skins PH levels. I like to use the Caudalie beauty elixir as a toner and face mist whenever I feel like I need an extra boost of facial hydration. Basically, I’ll tone when I find my skin has been breaking out, or when it’s dull and in need of a “pick-me-up”. Toning reminds me of bringing my skin back to some state of equilibrium. Your skin will change according to your hormone levels, lifestyle habits (i.e exercise, stress) and seasonal changes in the air. Toning will help stabilize any of these changes your skin could be facing. 

VITAMIN C SERUM AKA PREFERABLY HYALURONIC ACID

When I entered into my late 20’s (I know… how sad?) is when I really started getting into serums. There is absolutely nothing to be afraid of when it comes to implementing a serum into your daily routine. Actually, think of a serum as a helping hand to keeping your skin looking youthful and radiant. 

They will be working for your skin, not against it. Vitamin C serum basically evens out your skin tone, reduces fine lines and wrinkles. If you have yet to start implementing a serum into your skincare, have no fear, you’ll love it! Professionals also recommend applying vitamin C in the morning to help protect your skin against air polluters. Below you’ll find some of my fave Sephora vitamin C serums. 

EYE CREAM

I like to apply my eye cream after my serum. I’ve been religiously implementing eye cream into my skincare regimen since the ripe age of 13 (I know, I’m insane… but, to be fair, I grew up watching my mom do it, so, yeah, she got me obsessed with skincare). I definitely believe this to be one of the reasons my under eyes look so silky on a good day. 

The skin under your eyes is the thinnest and most sensitive area of your face, which is why you need to be extra careful with it. So, I recommend using your ring fingers to apply your eye cream to reduce the amount of pressure you apply. Remember, be gentle, your skin will thank you!

HYDRATING FACE MOISTURIZER

In my opinion, face cream is the holy grail to beautiful skin. Obviously, drinking a minimum of 3L of water a day, sleeping 6 1/2 to 8 hours a night and living a balanced lifestyle will dramatically help your skin. However, face cream is like the cherry on top of that cake; it brings everything together. If you want a little extra hydration, adding a night time face oil will do that for you, or, an overnight face mask, but be sure to wash that shit off the next morning or you might break out. All in all, face cream is essential. DO NOT sleep on face cream people, it will save your face! ps. my fave pimple treatment of all time is by Kate Somerville, it’s absolutely incredible!

SPF

SPF is the key to youthful, evenly toned, wrinkle free-ish skin. Ask any Korean skincare guru. They swear by SPF and most of them have porcelain-like skin. The answer is SPF ladies, it’s basically like magic. It was created for us to maintain our youthful glowing skin; to avoid uneven/dark spots and skin damage, so start using it. You’ll thank me later. 

EYE MASKS| FACE MASKS | LIP MASKS |FACE & BODY SELF TANNER

There are days when I don’t sleep (I suffer from a little insomnia) and I’ll need a little/a lot of help. That’s when I turn to eye, face and lip masks. A lip mask will help stimulate your natural collagen. The LA NEIGE one is like butter for your lips. In this unprecedented time we are living through, I have turned to these masks more times than I can count. They really do help improve the look of tired skin and I am so grateful for it.

Lastly, I love a good self tanner. A good tan can instantly boost your confidence level, giving you a glowing radiant complexion. The ones shared below aka Josie Maran and Tan Luxe self tan drops (I prefer light medium shade) are my favourite and give the most natural glowing looking tan.
